At Sohot we are continually staggered by the range of benefits Bikram Yoga gives people, over & beyond the truly amazing improvements in musculoskeletal fitness we all experience.   Below are the main ones our members detailed to us in a recent survey and which are proven in a vast amount of research carried out over the past 10 years.

 

Like any fitness program, if done incorrectly with a push push push approach, injures may occur.  That's not yoga.   We teach the mindful application of Bikram Hatha Yoga.  We teach how to practice safely and provide you with modifications, where necessary, that work.  We don't play music as that inhibits your body & mind communications - a recipe for injury.   We teach the mindful application of Strength, Breath, Focus & Stillness enhancing the power of the astonishing Bikram yoga sequence.  Using your strength for 90 minutes is not easy.  To also, be 100% in control of your strength is even harder.  We're not the easy option, but we are effective.

Bikram yoga helps you to develop a focused and calm mind, reduces stress and increases your awareness of your body & mind.

Focused and calm mind: Bikram Yoga is challenging. With a regular practice of even one or two classes a week you slowly develop a deeper focus and calmer, more relaxed mind, as well as an amazing awareness of your whole body.  As this develops you will find you are able to increase your level of precision and intensity within the poses.  This process works because Bikram Yoga is intensely physical, it forces you to meditate, to focus, to be aware of your breath, and to disengage from all outside thoughts.

Stress Reduction: Physical activity is good for relieving stress, and this is particularly true of Bikram yoga. Because of the concentration required, your daily troubles, both large and small, seem to melt away during the time you are doing yoga. This provides a much-needed break from your stressors, as well as helping put things into perspective. You can not stop the march of time - unless the pratice Bikram hot yoga.

On the whole, we live longer than we used to, and we all want high-quality living and good health to be a part of our older years. Extended periods of sitting lead to muscular shortening, tightening, and weakening. Lack of weight-bearing activity contributes to osteoporosis. Lack of movement and stretching leads to joint deterioration and loss of flexibility.  Many health concerns have been linked to the sedentary lifestyle which is typical of many older people, including, but not limited to the following:

Reduced joint flexibility
Arthritis/bursitis
High blood pressure
Increased body fat and decreased lean body tissue
Osteoporosis
Low back pain
Breathing difficulties
Poor blood circulation
Chronic pain
Stress-related symptoms

Bikram Yoga was developed for beginners of all abilities and ages.  Bikram Yoga can be quite challenging for older person simply because it is so damn annoying seeing the younger students going into the postures so much more and seemingly effortlessly.  You just have to remember that it does not matter how far you go into a posture.  To get the full benefits you just have to try your personal best.  Just standing on one leg and trying to grab the other foot in a heated room is so beneficial.  In the standing leg you are building bone density, strengthening the feet and leg muscle, increasing the blood flow, by contorting the thigh muscles such the knee cap lifts up you are strengthening and rehabilitating the knee joint.  Also from working the lungs,  opening up the shoulders, working the stomach muscles, to developing focus and determination the list goes on. Everyone gains from the medical benefits of the yoga just by trying.

One day you will grab the foot, which is wonderful.  Come as many times as you can even if it is once a week to start with.  In no time you will feel more confident and as you start noticing how much better you feel in your daily life, you will gain a desire to come even more.
